Cirrus Primary Academy Trust

MFL-French

Intent

At Avenue Primary Academy, our intention is for all our students to progress in all 4 language skills (Listening / Speaking / Reading / Writing). We want all students to be included in the teaching and learning of MFL and we want students to acquire a cultural understanding of the country where the Foreign Language is used, not only through lessons but also through extracurricular activities.

Implementation

Topics are revisited every year and students are building on prior knowledge, through challenging and ambitious lessons. Lesson plans are of a high quality ensuring that all our students are appropriately challenged and have the necessary resources to help them access the learning both inside and outside of the classroom environment; this is achieved through websites available to them to practise at home and blog posts that inform parents of the learning covered on a half-termly basis. Furthermore, our students are offered opportunities such as language competitions with other schools and French residential trips where the target language is spoken so they can see the purpose of learning a foreign language and apply their learning to real life.

Impact

We believe that our MFL curriculum helps our students to develop a passion for languages, whilst becoming aware that languages have a structure, and that this structure differs from one language to the next.  Students develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in the target language that they can build upon in later years. They explore and apply strategies to improve their own learning and gain enjoyment, pride and a sense of achievement in being able to communicate in another language. Our curriculum also helps students to explore their own cultural identity and those of others and develop a deeper appreciation and sensitivity of cultural differences.

The curriculum overview shows the learning that will take place in MFL in each year group.
